Technology group Wärtsilä has successfully upgraded its SAP enterprise resource planning (ERP) system by transitioning to the SAP S/4HANA Cloud platform across all its global operations in August 2025. The transition from the customised SAP ECC environment to the modern, world-leading SAP S/4HANA Cloud platform enabled by RISE with SAP, strengthens Wärtsilä’s digital core. Furthermore, it accelerates data-driven decision making, and enables the company to embed intelligence, optimisation and automation throughout its operations.

With SAP S/4HANA Cloud, Wärtsilä can now leverage advanced technologies, including AI, across its value chain, respond more rapidly to evolving customer needs and regulatory demands, and unlock significant opportunities for further operational improvements.

By gradually moving towards a cloud based clean core ERP domain, Wärtsilä will be well positioned to quickly address new business requirements, harness AI capabilities more effectively, and scale both operational and technical development initiatives faster across the organisation.

“Transitioning Wärtsilä to the latest and leading-edge technology in our ERP domain marks a major milestone in our journey of transformation and our commitment to shaping the decarbonisation of marine and energy. It sets the foundation for further optimisation of our business operations, with technologies like AI, together with external partners. With SAP S/4HANA Cloud, we can reinforce our commitment to transformation and continuous improvement, accelerate innovation, and enhance how we serve our customers,” says Arjen Berends, CFO of Wärtsilä.

“ERP is the backbone of our most critical business processes. Implementing the new SAP S/4HANA Cloud platform simultaneously across our all our businesses and our 77 countries world-wide was like open-heart surgery. This transition succeeded thanks to the expertise and dedication of Wärtsilä colleagues, and seamless collaboration with our partners and service providers Accenture, cbs, and SAP,” says Mari Hoppania, Vice President, ERP Transformation at Wärtsilä.

“This transformation is a crucial step in Wärtsilä's journey towards becoming a more agile, data-driven and future-ready company. It sets the stage for a future where Wärtsilä can thrive, adapt, and continue to deliver exceptional value to our customers and stakeholders,” Berends concludes.
